Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium compound that can inhibit the growth of many bacteria and fungi. Cetrimide has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus, and Clostridium perfringens. Cetrimide also inhibits cyclase enzymes and other enzyme activities in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It binds to the outer membrane of mitochondria in wild-type strains of Escherichia coli, preventing the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytoplasm.
Cetrimide is a surfactant that is used as an antimicrobial agent for medical devices and instruments. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of S. aureus, E. faecalis, B. cereus, C. perfringens, M. tuberculosis, M. av
