Calcium citrate malate is a calcium salt of malic acid. It is used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals and food supplements, as well as in the reaction solution for polymerase chain reactions. Citric acid has been shown to have a metabolic function in humans, including the maintenance of calcium homeostasis and the regulation of lipid metabolism. Calcium citrate malate is also used as an experimental model for metastable systems. The particles are formed by precipitation from aqueous solutions of citric acid, calcium chloride, and water.
