2-Chlorobenzyl bromide is a quaternary ammonium salt that is used in the synthesis of acetonitrile and piperidine. 2-Chlorobenzyl bromide has been shown to be an inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-4), which plays a key role in the metabolism of fatty acids. The synthesis of 2-chlorobenzyl bromide can be achieved by reacting acetonitrile with chloroacetone, followed by treatment with potassium hydroxide in methanol. This reaction produces 2-chlorobenzyl chloride, which reacts with sodium methoxide to produce 2-chlorobenzyl bromide and sodium chloride. The preparation of this compound can also be achieved using anion exchange resins. A preparative method for this compound is recrystallization from acetone/hexane mixtures followed by filtration.
