2-Carboxymorpholine hydrochloride (2CMMH) is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the class of carboxylic acids. The compound has a stereoselective binding site for bacteria and is active against β-lactamase-producing bacteria. 2CMMH can be synthesized by reacting chloroform with an esterified carboxylic acid, followed by reaction with ammonia and hydrogen chloride. 2CMMH can also be synthesized from an azido derivative and a carboxyl group. It has been shown to be an intermediate in the synthesis of other drugs such as ampicillin, cephalosporin C, erythromycin, penicillin G, and tetracycline.
