2H-Chromene-3-carbonitrile is an aldehyde that has been shown to be a reusable and heterocyclic precursor to a number of other compounds. 2H-Chromene-3-carbonitrile can be synthesized by the reaction of salicylic acid with methanol in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The resulting product is then heated at reflux with tetrahydrofuran until it forms 2H-chromene-3-carbonitrile. The mechanism behind this process is not yet fully understood, but it is thought that the chromium carboxylate complex formed between salicylic acid and methanol undergoes oxidative dealkylation by the action of chloride ions. This produces a formyl group, which then reacts with another molecule of methanol to produce a methylenecarboxylic acid. This intermediate then undergoes an electrophilic substitution reaction with one molecule of hydrogen cyan
