Description:
The 7-(chloromethyl)-5H-[1,3]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidin-5-one is an efficient method for the synthesis of aromatic aldehydes. The condensation of an aldehyde with formaldehyde and hydrochloric acid produces an acetal that undergoes isomerization to give the desired product. This reaction is catalyzed by spengler and yields are high. The reaction can also be used to produce other products such as 2-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane or 5-oxohexahydropyrimidine.
