3-Chloro-3-phenylacrylonitrile (3CPAN) is a novel styrene derivative that has been synthesized by utilising operationally simple processes. It can be prepared by the reaction of styrene with chloroacetyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst, such as pyridine or triethylamine. 3CPAN is a trisubstituted pyridine and unsymmetrical aldehyde. The ester groups in 3CPAN are cyano groups, which are optimised for the functional groups.
