2-Cyano-5-bromothiophene is a compound with an optical yield of 0.064 at 557 nm. It has been shown to be unreactive and stable in the presence of oxygen, nitrogen, and water. The bromine atom in 2-cyano-5-bromothiophene is capable of undergoing a palladium-catalyzed coupling reaction with electron deficient olefins to form aryl bromides. These reactions are efficient and selective, giving yields up to 95% after 24 hours. 2-Cyano-5-bromothiophene also has antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
