4-(Chloromethyl)thiazole hydrochloride (CTH) is a crystalline, racemic compound that is soluble in water. It has been found to have pharmacological activity and can be used as a ligand for coordination of metal ions. CTH has also been shown to exhibit both antibacterial and antifungal properties. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of pyrimidines, which are essential components of DNA and RNA. CTH is also an antibiotic that is active against gram-positive bacteria such as staphylococci and streptococci, but not against gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli or
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This drug was originally developed as a sulfanilamide-type sulfone antibiotic and was later found to have better antibacterial properties than its parent molecule.
