4-Cyano-3-methylnitrobenzene is an amine that inhibits the production of melanin by inhibiting the activity of tyrosinase. This compound is synthesized from 4-hydroxynitrobenzene and methyl iodide, and has been shown to be effective against a number of cancer cell lines in vitro. The 4-cyano group on the nitrobenzene ring is oriented in a coplanar conformation with the methyl group, which may help to explain the inhibitory effects on melanin production.
