5-Chloro-3-formyl-1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is a chemical that can be used as an analytical reagent for the detection of chlorophenols. The condensation of 5-chloroindole and formaldehyde yields this compound, which is then hydrolyzed to produce pyruvic acid and indole. This reaction is catalyzed by aniline. Another possible synthesis involves the condensation of formaldehyde with ethyl pyruvate. This reaction produces 5-chloroindole and ethyl pyruvate, which in turn react to form 5-chloro-3-(formyl) indole carboxylic acid ethyl ester. The use of pyruvic acid as a starting material instead of formaldehyde makes this reaction more environmentally friendly.
