6-Chloro-1H-benzoimidazole-2-carboxylic acid is a ligand that can be used to activate cancer cell death by binding to arenes. It has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of myelogenous leukemia cells and fibroblast cells. This compound binds to the benzene ring of the arene, causing it to release an electron and become reactive. 6-Chloro-1H-benzoimidazole-2-carboxylic acid has been shown to decelerate the growth of cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit glucose uptake in these cells. This drug has also been shown to have antidiabetic properties, which may be due to its activation of AMPK, resulting in increased uptake of glucose in muscle cells.
