1-Chloro-3-fluorobenzene is a chlorinated hydrocarbon that is used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and pesticides. The dipole moment of 1-chloro-3-fluorobenzene is constant, which makes it an ideal candidate for NMR spectroscopy, especially for identification and determination of the concentration of solutes. 1-Chloro-3-fluorobenzene can be synthesized by reacting chlorine with carbon tetrachloride. This reaction produces a molecule with one fluorine atom attached to each carbon atom in the benzene ring. The chlorination process also creates reactive molecules that will react with other substances to produce new compounds. Some possible reaction products are hydrogen chloride, hydrogen fluoride, and phosgene.
