1,2,3,4-Cyclobutanetetracarboxylic Dianhydride is a cross-linking agent with a carbonyl group. It reacts with polyimide to form a liquid crystal polymer. The cyclobutantetracarboxylic dianhydride has reactivity similar to that of a hydroxyl group and can be used as an esterifying agent for polyimides. This chemical's synthesis involves the reaction of hydrochloric acid and dimethyl fumarate in the presence of diphenyl ether and ester linkages. 1,2,3,4-Cyclobutanetetracarboxylic Dianhydride has been shown to have good thermal expansion properties when used in polyimides.
