Ceftriaxone sodium (Ceftriaxonum natricum) is a semisynthetic, broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic. It has bactericidal activity against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Ceftriaxone binds to the penicillin-binding proteins in the bacterial cell wall by competitive inhibition. This binding prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. Ceftriaxone sodium inhibits DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. Ceftriaxone also has a long half-life in humans, which may be due to its ability to form conjugates with amino acids or other organic substances.
