4-Cyano-2-fluorobenzaldehyde (4FCB) is a potent and selective inhibitor of the thrombin protease that has been shown to inhibit the activity of trypsin, chymotrypsin, and elastase. 4FCB binds to the active site of these enzymes with high affinity and inhibits their activity by steric hindrance. 4FCB has also been shown to inhibit xanthine oxidase in vitro. The crystallographic analysis of 4FCB revealed that it binds to the active site of thrombin by mimicking the natural substrate, which is a lysine residue. The affinity constants for 4FCB binding are greater than 10^8 M^(-1), making this molecule an excellent candidate for inhibition of proteases. Furthermore, 4FCB has been shown to be a reversible inhibitor of trypsin, thrombin, and chymotrypsin in vitro. This drug also causes a
