2-Chloro-4-nitroanisole is a phenylpropionic acid which has been shown to inhibit the glutamate receptor subtype. It was used in a study on the effect of 2-chloro-4-nitroanisole on the growth of cells. The inhibitory dose for this drug is not known, but it has been shown to produce cell growth inhibition at concentrations of 0.1 mM. Glutamate receptors are activated by binding with glutamate and have been implicated in various neurological disorders such as stroke and epilepsy. These receptors are also involved in many other important processes such as learning, memory, and neuronal development. The activation energies for this drug are 8 kcal/mol and 8 kcal/mol respectively for the two subunits that make up glutamate receptors. In addition, 2-chloro-4-nitroanisole inhibits the activity of Cu(II)-Fe(III) superoxide dismutase (Cu-Fe).
