Cniforin A is a flavonoid that is found in the fructus of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius. It has antioxidative activity and inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their cell membranes, which causes them to lose their permeability. Cniforin A also inhibits the enzymatic activity of the enzyme phospholipase A2, which is responsible for breaking down the lipid bilayer of cells. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of arachidonic acid, which in turn generates prostaglandins and leukotrienes, both inflammatory mediators. Cniforin A can be used as an antimicrobial agent in traditional Chinese medicine.END>
