Cardiolipin is a phospholipid that plays an important role in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Cardiolipin is synthesized in the inner leaflet inner membrane of the mitochondria (IMM) and interacts with a several IMM proteins. The activity of the enzyme complexes of the electron transport chain (ETC) are moderated by cardiolipin and it affects ATP production and organization into supercomplexes. Cardiolipin can be separated from other phospholipids using chromatographic analysis.
