Calcitonin is a peptide hormone that is secreted from the parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland. It binds to receptors in bone, and increases the rate of bone resorption and decreases the rate of new bone formation. Calcitonin also lowers blood calcium levels by inhibiting the release of calcium from bone, reducing renal calcium reabsorption, and increasing renal calcium excretion. Calcitonin has been shown to have vasoactive intestinal peptide-like activity in rats, which may be due to its ability to stimulate bronchial smooth muscle and regulate airway tone. Calcitonin can also bind to human lung tissue, although it does not have an effect on calcium levels in humans.
