Cecropin B is a peptide with antibacterial activity. It was originally isolated from the bee cecropia and has been shown to have potent in vitro antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacterial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Cecropin B is a hydrophobic peptide that binds to Toll-like receptor 4, which activates the transcriptional factor NF-κB. This leads to cell lysis by activating the protease cecropin A.
Cecropin B also has protective effects against autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. The peptide prevents the production of inflammatory cytokines by binding to Toll-like receptor 2 and Toll-like receptor 4. It also inhibits DNA synthesis by inhibiting polymerase chain reaction and protein synthesis by inhibiting ribosomal translocation.
