Ticarcillin is a quinoline derivative antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the penicillin-binding protein. It has been shown to be effective against a number of bacteria, including Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, which is resistant to amoxicillin sodium. Ticarcillin is also active against a variety of other bacteria that are resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics because it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to the penicillin-binding protein and prevents cross-linkage of peptidoglycan chains. Ticarcillin has been shown to be effective in animal experiments at doses of 25 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours for 3 days or 50 mg/kg intravenously every 12 hours for 2-3 days. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
