Description

Calcium diascorbate is a synthetic, polyhydroxylated, inorganic compound that inhibits the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A to mevalonate, which is an important step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol and other lipids. Calcium diascorbate is used as a nutraceutical supplement for its ability to reduce serum cholesterol levels and to prevent atherosclerosis. It also has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis by binding with the hydroxyl group on carbon 1 of acetoacetyl-CoA. Calcium diascorbate can be used as a sorbant for various materials such as ceramics, carbonaceous particles, and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
