1-(2-Chloroethyl)-3-(2-Fluoroethyl)-1-Nitrosourea (MECN) is a potent cytotoxic agent that belongs to the class of nitrosoureas. MECN has been shown to have a dose-dependent effect on morphology and is a potent probe for measuring the uptake of radiolabeled busulfan into lymphocytes. MECN alters cellular morphology by inducing vacuolization and apoptosis, leading to cell death. It is particularly useful in the treatment of cancerous lymphocytes, such as those found in lymphocytic leukemia, because it targets these cells specifically. Furthermore, MECN does not cause any significant depression or damage to healthy cells.
