3,5-Dinitrothiophen-2-amine is a chlorophyll analog that can be used to study the electron transfer process in photosystem II. 3,5-Dinitrothiophen-2-amine has been shown to be capable of reacting with exogenous acceptors such as oxygen or nitric oxide and emitting light when excited by light. This compound also has the ability to reduce daltons and act as a redox catalyst. It is used in kinetic studies of enzyme reactions, such as trypsin treatment of chloroplast membranes or the carotenoid biosynthetic pathway.
