2-[4-[3-Chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl]oxyphenoxy]propanoic acid is a phenoxy fatty acid. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of plants by competitively inhibiting the production of essential amino acids and other metabolites. The herbicide inhibits plant growth by binding to the enzyme acetolactate synthase, which catalyzes the conversion of acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) and pyruvate into two molecules of acetoacetyl CoA. This reaction is necessary for fatty acid synthesis. 2-[4-[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-2-yl]oxyphenoxy]propanoic acid is an enantiomer that exhibits chemical stability in water and hydrogen fluoride.
