p-Anisyl ethyl ether is a nucleophilic bond cleavage agent that can be used as an oxidant. It was first synthesized in 1879 by the French chemist Charles-Adolphe Wurtz. p-Anisyl ethyl ether is soluble in most organic solvents but not water, and its reaction with chloride produces radical chlorides. The use of p-anisyl ethyl ether as an oxidant has been shown to be mediated by the light of a mercury lamp, which causes it to react with oxygen and form ozone. Oxidizing reactions using this reagent are generally slow, so it is often used for reactions that require long periods of time. For example, p-anisyl ethyl ether has been used to produce yields of carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes and ketones from alcohols and phenols. It also catalyzes the oxidation of benzene to give phenoxybenzoic acid esters
