2,6-Dimethylbenzamide (2,6-DB) is a potent and selective agonist for the α1-adrenergic receptor. Stimulation of this receptor results in desensitization of the receptor, which can be used to study the effects of adrenergic receptors on tissue responses. 2,6-DB is also used to prepare tissues for analysis by immunohistochemistry. 2,6-DB has been shown to inhibit HIV replication by blocking the CCR5 receptor on CD4+ T cells. This drug also inhibits phospholipase A2 activity and fatty acid release in vitro. 2,6-DB has been shown to have antiulcerogenic effects in rats with induced ulcers by administration of indomethacin or ethanol. The antiulcerogenic effects observed may be due to inhibition of gastric acid secretion and inhibition of gastric emptying.
