Furamidine is a molecule that has the properties of a maleate and is used in the treatment of biliary tract disorders. Furamidine dihydrochloride (FD) is a prodrug that is converted to furamidine by hydrolysis in vivo, which binds to DNA and blocks DNA replication. FD has been shown to inhibit the growth of K562 cells and human muscle cells, but not other cells such as hepatocytes. The mechanism may be related to its ability to interfere with methyltransferase activity, which leads to decreased production of proteins from dna templates. Furamidine has also been shown to have antioxidant properties and can protect against DNA damage caused by hydrogen chloride or nitric oxide.
