3-(Hexylamino)propionitrile is an aliphatic amine that can be used as a precursor for the manufacture of the antibiotic drug, erythromycin. It is also used as a building block for the synthesis of other pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. 3-(Hexylamino)propionitrile can be prepared by reacting hexamethylenetetramine with nitric acid to yield acrylonitrile, which reacts with hydrochloric acid to form 3-(hexylamino)propionic acid. This product is an intermediate in the synthesis of antibiotics such as erythromycin and other pharmaceuticals.
