Cetaben is a drug that belongs to the class of fatty acid esters. It is used to treat hypercholesterolemia and has been shown to inhibit cholesterol esterase in cell culture. Cetaben also inhibits fatty acid synthase, an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of fatty acids. In addition, cetaben has been shown to inhibit mitochondrial beta-oxidation of fatty acids, thereby inhibiting the production of ketone bodies and reducing blood glucose levels. Cetaben has also been shown to reduce liver damage caused by toxic substances such as ethanol or acetaminophen by preventing their metabolism in the liver.
