2,5-Dichloro-1,4-phenylenediamine (2,5-DCP) is a fluorescent dye with an orange color. It has been used in optical techniques and in microscopy as a counterstain. 2,5-DCP can be prepared by the catalytic reduction of hydrogen peroxide with chloride. The compound also acts as an intermediate for the synthesis of diazonium salts and acylation reactions. 2,5-DCP is readily oxidized to form the corresponding quinone methide which can react with amides to form amides. This reaction occurs at lower temperatures than other methods for forming amides. Immunohistochemical analysis has shown that 2,5-DCP reacts with amide groups in proteins such as alpha 1 antitrypsin (AAT).
