Beta-Damascone is a synthetic fragrance that is used in various types of soaps, detergents, and personal care products. It has been shown to have a detection sensitivity of less than one part per trillion. Beta-Damascone is found naturally in a number of essential oils, such as geraniol and methyl anthranilate. This chemical is also used in the production of dimethyl fumarate, which can be found in asthma inhalers. When mixed with calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid, beta-damascone forms sodium carbonate. The carotenoid beta-carotene can also be synthesized from this chemical.
