3,5-Dichloropyridine is a chemical compound that is used in the industrial preparation of pharmaceuticals and other organic compounds. 3,5-Dichloropyridine is prepared by the reaction of 2,4-dichloro-6-nitropyrimidine with phosphorus pentachloride. This reaction produces a symmetric molecule with two identical nitrogen atoms at each end of the molecule. The deuteration of 3,5-dichloropyridine was achieved by substituting one or more hydrogen atoms with deuterium atoms (i.e., heavy water). 3,5-Dichloropyridine has been shown to have cytotoxic activity against cancer cells in vitro.
