Description:

2,6-Dichlorobenzothioazole is a molecular compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It was synthesized by reacting the anion of 2,6-dichlorobenzoic acid with the cation of thiourea in aqueous solution at pH 5.5. The reaction system is kinetic and proceeds via protonation, catalytic hydrogenation and polymerization reactions. The crystallised product was obtained using methanol as solvent and its structure was elucidated by X-ray diffraction studies. This compound has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and Sarcina lutea, but not against Gram-negative ones such as Escherichia coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
