Eflornithine hydrochloride is a drug that inhibits the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase. This enzyme is responsible for converting the amino acid ornithine to putrescine, which is used in the synthesis of polyamines. Eflornithine hydrochloride has been shown to inhibit the growth of cancer cells in animals and humans by reducing the level of polyamine synthesis. It also has a direct inhibitory effect on hematopoietic cells, which may be due to its inhibition of protein synthesis.
