Fluconazole is a triazole antifungal drug that is effective against many types of fungi, including Candida glabrata. It inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, leading to cell lysis. Fluconazole has been shown to be effective against C. glabrata isolates from humans and animals with disseminated candidiasis. Fluconazole also has a low level of activity against Aspergillus species and Cryptococcus neoformans. Fluconazole is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and can interact with other drugs metabolized by this enzyme system, such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, and theophylline.
