1-(3,4-difluorophenyl)propan-1-one is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of other chemical compounds. It is a colorless liquid with a boiling point of 188°C and a melting point of -14°C. The synthesis of 1-(3,4-difluorophenyl)propan-1-one starts by reacting propanal with ethylene glycol and nitrous acid. This reaction forms propionyl chloride and water as products. Propionyl chloride then reacts with magnesium to form dibenzylamine and 3,4-difluoroaniline. The amine is then reacted with chloride to form 1-(3,4-difluorophenyl)propan-1-one when irradiated with ultraviolet light.
