2,6-Dichloro-3-fluorobenzoic acid is a synthetic chemical that is used as a pesticide. It can be synthesized by the oxidation of 2,6-dichlorobenzaldehyde with copper (II) acetate in the presence of formic acid. The reaction produces 2,6-dichloro-3-fluorobenzoic acid and formic acid. This transformation can be carried out in two steps: first, the formation of a copper salt of formic acid by adding sulfolane to formic acid; second, the addition of an oxidant such as hydrogen peroxide or potassium permanganate to the salt to produce 2,6-dichloro-3-fluorobenzoic acid.
