1,2-Dimethyl-1H-imidazole-5-carbaldehyde is a metallation reagent that is used to introduce a methyl group into an organic molecule. This reaction is best carried out in the presence of a base, such as triethylamine. The hydroxymethylation reaction can be carried out in either tetrahydrofuran (THF) or mixtures of THF and water. The temperature range for this reaction is between -78°C and 0°C. Reaction mixtures containing 5-hydroxymethyl 1,2-dimethyl imidazole are typically heated at temperatures ranging from 50°C to 100°C.
