3,5-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid is a prodrug that is metabolized to the active form of 3,5-dimethylphenoxyacetic acid. This compound interacts with the pump inhibitor site on the Na+/K+ ATPase and slows down its activity, which leads to an increase in intracellular sodium concentrations and a decrease in intracellular potassium concentrations. The change in ionic balance may lead to cell death by osmotic lysis. 3,5-Dimethylphenoxy)acetic acid has been shown to be effective against leukemia cells but not against other types of cancer cells.
