Dichlorprop-P is a phenoxy herbicide that is absorbed by plants and kills them by inhibiting photosynthesis. It is used to control weeds in crop fields, lawns, and gardens. Dichlorprop-P can be applied to the surface of the soil or sprayed on leaves. The herbicide binds to chlorophyll molecules and prevents the formation of carotenoids, which are necessary for photosynthesis. Dichlorprop-P also binds to iron in plant cells and inhibits uptake of iron into chloroplasts. This binding results in an accumulation of lipid peroxides in plant cells, which cause cell death.
Dichlorprop-P has been shown to have a higher uptake with ultraviolet light than without ultraviolet light (UV). The analytical method used in this study was UV absorption at 280 nm with a spectrophotometer set at 1 cm path length. Dichlorprop-P has no terminal residues on its fatty acid chain; however,
