2,4-Dimethylphenoxyacetic acid is a synthesized chemical that has been found to have an inhibitory effect on the enzyme 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase. This enzyme is responsible for the conversion of tyrosine to phenol and benzoic acid. 2,4-Dimethylphenoxyacetic acid also inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting their ability to synthesize proteins. The mutant strain of Escherichia coli was found to be more sensitive to this chemical than the wild type strain. The synthesis of 2,4-dimethylphenoxyacetic acid yields 1g per 5mL of reaction mixture in a 24 hour period at pH 7.0 and 25°C with a yield of 46%.
2,4-Dimethylphenoxyacetic acid is not metabolized by any known biochemical pathways and can be excreted unchanged in urine.
