2,6-Dimethoxy-7-deazapurine is a lactam intramolecular inhibitor that irreversibly inhibits xanthine oxidase. This compound has a carbodiimide functional group that reacts with the lactam ring to form an ether and an alkylating agent. The reactive site of this compound is not at the nitrogen atom, but rather the oxygen atom. The ether is formed by reaction of the carbodiimide with the lactam ring. The alkylating agent is formed by reaction of the ether with one of two nucleophiles: water or alcohol.
