3,3'-Dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide is a fluorescent dye that can be used as an indicator of membrane potential. 3,3'-Dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide has been shown to have a high affinity for antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria and is toxic to many types of parasites. It has been found to be effective against the parasite Schistosoma mansoni and other helminths. 3,3'-Dipropylthiacarbocyanine iodide has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis. The mechanism by which this drug inhibits bacterial growth is not known but may involve disruption of membrane potential or inhibition of DNA synthesis.
