5,6-Dimethoxy-1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid (5,6DMICA) is a synthetic compound that is structurally related to the naturally occurring substance melanin. It is synthesized by polymerizing 5,6DMICA with deuterated diethyl ether in methylating conditions. The resulting product has been shown to have potent anti-cancer properties and was designed for use in monitoring cancer cells. 5,6DMICA has been shown to inhibit DNA synthesis and induce cell death by binding to the electron micrographs of polymerized melanin in malignant cells. This drug also inhibits the growth of tumour cells by inducing apoptosis.
