3,5-Dibromosulphanilamide is a chlorinating agent that reacts with water to form hypochlorite. It is used in the disinfection of wastewater and sewage sludge. 3,5-Dibromosulphanilamide can be used to track the amount of chlorine added to water by measuring the concentration of bromine (Br) in the solution. The reaction between 3,5-dibromosulphanilamide and sodium hypochlorite produces a chlorinated organic compound called dichloroacetyl chloride. This reaction occurs when 3,5-dibromosulphanilamide is added to a solution containing sodium hypochlorite and a halogenating agent such as thymol or bromine. The Br atom of 3,5-dibromosulfanilamide replaces one of the Cl atoms on the thymol molecule during this reaction, creating dichloroacetyl chloride.
