1,3-Dimethyl-2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid (DMTPC) is a naturally occurring compound that is synthesized in the human body. It is an intermediate in the biosynthesis of orotic acid and pyrimidine nucleotides. DMTPC has been shown to be activated by radiation and can be used as a radioprotective agent against ionizing radiation. This drug has also been shown to stabilize DNA against the effects of low levels of ionizing radiation and can protect cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species.
