Description:

4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one is an organic compound that is a zwitterion with a carbonyl group. It has been shown to activate the nucleophilic attack of hydroxide ion in aqueous solution and form the corresponding carboxylic acid. The activation energy for this reaction is 42 kcal/mol. This compound has also been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to ribosomes in the presence of ATP and forming an inactive complex. 4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-oxazolidin-2-one reacts with the amino acid histidine at a rate that is dependent on pH and temperature. The reaction rate was found to be first order for both reactants at pH 7 but second order at pH 2.
