4,4-Diethoxybut-1-ene is a triethyl orthoformate that is used in sample preparation and as a synthetic chemical. It is also used to make the aldolase, which is an enzyme involved in glycolysis that catalyzes the conversion of dihydroxyacetone phosphate and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate into D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate and erythrose 4-phosphate. This compound has been shown to be carcinogenic in rats at high doses. 4,4-Diethoxybut-1-ene may also be used as an acid catalyst for stereoselective epoxidation reactions. The stereochemical course of this reaction can be controlled by substituting the chloride with magnesium or other Lewis acids. 4,4-Diethoxybut-1-ene is also an intermediate in the shikimate pathway and can be converted into aziridine, which is
